Noise under the bonnet

This has been an increadibly reliable car and I regularly drive it on long runs including going to Nuremberg at least once a year. I had to do a rushed 500 round mile trip yesterday from Corfe Mullen to Northampton and back. I stopped to refuel at a garage about halfway down the A34 on my way back and when I restarted the car there was a terrible noise from under the bonnet sounding like it had no oil in it or at the very least a bearing badly gone. Having checked all the obvious including oil etc. The charging was fine the water temp was good but I am thinking it might be the water pump bearing as the pulley feels a little sloppy . I had the cam belt changed by the garage that I bought it from 2 years ago last Feb. The noise does not appear to increase appreciably with rev. Any ideas? Although it is 2002 it is auto and has only done just over 80 thousand miles now, it was around 62 when I got it. I have noticed that on E bay they are selling cam belt and water pump kits together does that mean they have to be done together or can I do it separately and how much of a job is it. I am a development engineer by trade! Many thanks for any advice or tips. Graham

You can do cam belt and water pump separate if you like, but while changing the pump may as well chuck a new belt on it as the belt has to come off anyway

When I had a weird noise on my Clio, I brought a cheap stethoscope from eBay for a couple of quid, one with a long thin end, then go around holding the thin end on things to see if the noise is present through the scope. Mine ended up as the idle pulley, not to say yours is though

Loose heat shield can cause a hell of a racket too

Thanks guy's I will check out the heat shield first as the water pump change sounds like a hell of a lot of work to do on the drive!

I agree with Elmerfudd, I bought a stethoscope in a market for €5 and it's great for finding unknown noises.

Great stuff, just be careful poking it about near moving parts.

Yes. Thanks for the advice, I Got it this morning and it turned out to be the air con pump! Any one know where I can get a cheep replacement? As new price is a little extortionate to say the least. There are some used ones on E Bay but not sure how good they are! Any ideas would be appreciated. I have taken the pulley and belt off for the time being. Shame it's as the weather is just improving!!!

Jacob Robinson on the FB group breaks coupes and will probably have one, he should be able to vouch for it's working condition.

If he hasn't then take a gamble on an eBay one

You may need to get a specialist to look at it once fitted, as the air con on other cars require oil to be added with the refrigerant charge when a new compressor is fitted. Don't know how this stands on the coupe, been out the air con game for a few years now. Just something to look into before going for it.

Thanks for that, If I get one, I will get my garage to fit and re-gas it so hopefully they will know about that. but I suppose it could be different for a used one.
