Travellers planning a car trip to France this summer are being reminded to carry a warning triangle, reflective jacket and breathalyser kit with them at all times.
It is estimated that around 17 million Britons travel to France each year, many of them by car.
Peter Rodger, chief examiner at road safety charity IAM, says drivers also need to remember that France's drink-drive limit is only 50mg per 100ml of blood, compared with 80mg in the UK.
Those who are caught driving at more than 40km/h over the speed limit will have their driving licence seized on the spot and are likely to face a severe fine.
Mr Rodger also explains to travellers that only children aged 10 or over are allowed to sit in the front passenger seat, and that carrying a radar speed camera detector is illegal in France, even if it is not in use.
He adds that travellers should take regular breaks, especially if they aren't used to driving on the right hand side of the road.
Always exit on the right side so you don't revert to driving on the left.
